The Next Generation of Venture Capitalist in the "Great 38" - Introducing Abhinav Patibandla
Investing in diverse tech-enabled startups while fostering future leaders through hands-on fellowship experiences in venture capital
At DVRGNT Ventures, our mission is to invest in tech-enabled startups across the most economically and culturally diverse region of America, known as the "Great 38" states, formerly called Middle America. But our vision goes beyond investment—we are dedicated to expanding knowledge of the venture capital industry by creating pathways for aspiring investors through our fellowship program. This program offers hands-on exposure to financial analysis, due diligence, portfolio management, and more. In the coming weeks, we’ll spotlight our fellows, sharing their backgrounds, goals, and motivations for pursuing a career in venture capital.
Meet Abhinav Patibandla
“Say yes, deal with the consequences.” I wish I could say I first heard this from a wise mentor or in some life-changing moment—but honestly, I think I just read it on a sticky note one day. It’s a simple line that stuck with me, and it’s shaped how I approach just about everything, from academics to friendships. Since starting college at ASU, that saying has been like a green light, pushing me to jump at every opportunity, even if I don’t know exactly where it’ll lead. Whether it’s connecting with new people, diving into unfamiliar subjects, or taking on projects that intimidate me, I’ve learned that saying "yes" is often the first step toward growth and discovery.
Back in high school, I was knee-deep in computer science, but soon realized that staying behind a screen wasn’t for me. I wanted something that combined analysis with real-world impact, which led me to finance and eventually to venture capital.
Simply put: I’m here because I’m drawn to big ideas and even bigger challenges. DVRGNT Ventures is where bold ideas meet real impact, and I knew this was where I could roll up my sleeves and dive right in. With constantly shifting markets and emerging industries, it’s essential to ask, “What are we doing differently?” That’s where DVRGNT stands out: its people-first approach to venture capital. It’s not just about investing in ideas—it’s about investing in the right teams. A strong team can mean the difference between success and “what if,” and at DVRGNT, we look for founders who are as resilient, innovative, and committed as the ideas they’re building. For me, it’s energizing to be part of a firm that prioritizes the human side of venture capital, valuing collaboration, empathy, and a long-term vision alongside financial growth.
So, how do I contribute to such a dynamic team? My finance journey really took off when I joined TAMID Group and New Venture Group (NVG) during my freshman year. Both are student-led consulting clubs where I met incredible mentors and gained hands-on business experience. I was the first freshman elected as Director of Consulting Education at TAMID Group, which gave me the chance to pay forward the mentorship I received. NVG, in particular, taught me the art of asking the right questions—because at the end of the day, that’s what consulting is all about. Below is a picture from NVG's yearly retreat!
By the end of my freshman year, I had the opportunity to join the 2024 Investment Banking Industry Scholars cohort, where I further honed my technical skills. I now apply these skills at a local real estate consulting firm, specifically working on sell-side M&A deals.
At DVRGNT, I get to combine those technical skills with the human side of business. I work through financial documents while supporting founders with the grit, drive, and vision to reshape their industries. I believe in backing companies that aren’t just out to make a profit—they’re out to make a difference.
Looking back, I don’t think my 4-year-old self would have believed how far we’ve come. I’m excited to see what lies ahead.
